First two weeks of med school down...
Yes!! Two weeks of school are done and over with. AWESOME! Except for the fact that a lot has happened in the past three weeks (since we've been here) and I haven't even blogged yet. However, only having Internet on your iPhone makes it a bit difficult to type an entire page so...I guess I haven't been slacking completely... But for now I must share what has happened in the past few weeks...
We MOVED! As most of you know, the original place we moved into, which was walking distance from the school, was a mess. There was cat pee in my mother-in-law's future bedroom (yes, I will explain in a bit...); there were bugs EVERYWHERE including my retainer case, toothbrush cover, and our bed (YUCK!); a rattlesnake enjoying the weather in our yard/sun room; and overall the place was just completely filthy (dog hair on the "newly shampooed carpet", an inch thick of dog hair in the washer, a half an inch of scum inside the dishwasher, and the list goes on). Thankfully, praise God, we were able to get out of there and into our new place without ANY bumps along the way. It was amazing to see God's grace in the entire experience. We had one day to find a home in Yakima, after moving our stuff out of Seattle into a storage unit, and before vacationing for two months. Looking for a new place to move into with only a few hours to search, was nerve-racking. Rather than trusting in God that He would provide, we wanted to make sure we had a place and took the home-search into our own hands. We quickly decided on the first home out of fear. Like I said, thankfully God is bigger than ALL of that and brought us to the right place (even with Peng! for this new home doesn't allow cats, but the landlord made an exception). God really got us out of a mess we put ourselves in. No legal problems followed the second move. Praise Him! And on top of ALL of that, we were able to move the first of the month, Aaron's shortest day of orientation week.
Second big thing, Aaron started med school! Obviously...But it has been really really great! He is absolutely loving it! And this is the entire point of this blog, with a bit of my extra input about random stuff of course. :) I started this blog because most grad level students do not have extra spare time, especially med students. I wanted to give the rest of the world a taste of what our doctors go through in their early career years. To share our struggles, joys, excitements and overall, this new, long and important season.
I'll answer a couple questions that have been asked often,
"Do you plan to work while you are in med school?"-- Nope. It is IMPOSSIBLE in med school to pull off school and a job (even part time) . School hours are from 8am-5pm. Studying is usually before class for an hour or so and after for four to five. That's a total of 15 hours a day, give or take...Usually give. Then Saturdays are about 12 hours of studying. We have decided to take Sundays completely off and continue to have a Sabbath day. Even if he can't "afford" to, it just means he has to work extra hard the rest of the week. We are realizing how important Sundays are though to be kept just that, a day of rest.
"What are you doing while he's in school?" --HA! Lots! I am actually enjoying it. Sure, I get a bit lonely, but I am able to keep myself really busy. So far at least... I did not think I would enjoy all this alone time, but so far it is going really well. I'm getting new girlfriends, finding new hobbies, and working on old ones, growing my training business, and enjoying being Aaron's chief, maid, handyman, and whatever else I can do for him. I know not everyone does it this way, and many people feel like I am spoiling him, but it has been SUCH a BLESSING!! This was something God really placed on my heart. I wanted to be able to take care of any extra things outside of school I could for him so he could put all of his energy into school, knowing God and spending some time with me.
"Why is your mother-in-law living with you?!"-- And yes, I can hear the exclamation marks. Well, Aaron is obviously gone a LOT so it's just me, and Aaron's mom, Janice, is ready for a change. She's moving and retiring from Alaska and coming down to Yakima to be with us to support Aaron and I and to go to nursing school. It is much easier to get off of the wait list down here, cheaper education and rent in Yakima, plus it makes money a little easier on everyone while their both in school. Sure it's going to be crazy, fun, sometimes weird, but overall we are all very excited! God has blessed us with this opportunity to be a close family (very close living in a three bedroom townhouse), and a time to depend on each other.
So with all of that being said, if you are still here, wow. Congrats to you! Next week I'll get more in detail about Aaron's classes, my new hobbies (cooking, share some recipes and photos) and put up pictures of our new place since I know a couple of you have been asking. Until then...
